Candid Memories

When families ask me what a session with me is really like, I always tell them the same thing: it’s about making memories together—not standing perfectly still and smiling at the camera.

This recent family photography session in Kearney, Nebraska, was the perfect example.

Mom, Dad, and their two energetic boys met me along the beautiful Platte River just outside of Kearney, NE, where we spent the evening splashing through the water, spotting tadpoles, and simply enjoying time together.

It wasn’t about creating perfectly posed photographs—it was about capturing the joy that already exists within their family.

You Don’t Have to Know How to Pose

One of the biggest concerns I hear from families before their session is: “We’re awkward in front of the camera.”

The truth is—you don’t need to know what to do. Throughout every session, I guide families with simple prompts instead of stiff poses.

Prompts create authentic reactions instead of forced smiles. The result is a gallery filled with genuine laughter, real connection, and the little moments you’ll want to remember years from now.

Kids don’t need to sit perfectly still to create beautiful photographs. In fact, some of the most meaningful images happen when they’re free to be exactly who they are.

As a family photographer in Kearney, Nebraska, my goal isn’t just to create beautiful portraits - it’s to preserve the way your family loves, laughs, and spends time together.

Years from now, I hope your photos remind you of how your boys laughed until their stomachs hurt, how little hands reached for yours, and how a simple evening by the river became one of your favorite memories.

If you’re worried about your children being too energetic or your family not knowing how to pose, know that those are often the sessions that turn out to be the most magical. Movement, laughter, and genuine connection are always welcome.
